UCR Study Abroad - UCR Summer Abroad Program

2017 Jardín, Colombia

Art, Architecture, and Literature in Colombia

Ready to experience one of the most unique nations of Latin America? Land of Nobel Laureates as well as famous singers and actresses? Shakira, Susana Vergara, and Nobel Laureate Gabriel García Márquez all hail from Colombia. World class artists and pop singers are both from the region of Antioquia, the setting for this summer program. The peaceful and quaint town of Jardín is first setting for this program, where you will feel like you have been transformed to the nineteenth century, nestled in the mountains of Colombia’s coffee land and banana trees. After two weeks in this idyllic setting, you will be in modern, twenty-first century El Pobaldo, with coffee shops called Juan Valdés instead of Starbucks, salsa and reggaetón more than the folkloric. Take courses from UCR Distinguished Professor Raymond L. Williams, with ample participation of writers and professors from the host institution, the safe and luxurious Universidad EAFIT. Graduate students from the EAFIT will be official hosts, individually, with UCR, students, serving as compañeros, compañeras, or acompañantes. You will not just study Colombian culture and literature, you will experience the magic of what Colombians call the realismo mágico of everyday life in this unique nation. In the evening, the program will include beginning classes of salsa, bachata, porro. Total cost, including tuition for 8 units and flight, in range of $5,000. Financial aid for UCR and special scholarships available.

Students enroll in 8 units of the appropriate classes according to their level, combining introduction to culture and literature and Spanish 190(special project). The former is Colombian culture with emphasis on Antioquia, and 190 is a special topic in Colombia. Based on levels of interest to be determined. Each student will be assigned a graduate student compañero(a) or acompañante. Classes held outdoors and at coffee shops in El Jardin; at Universidad EAFIT in El Poblado. Meals a variety of settings, including lunches at Univ EAFIT, where students will have choices. This program is projected as an annual offering into 2018 and beyond.
