UCR Study Abroad - UCR Summer Abroad Program

2017 Oaxaca/Juchitán, Mexico

Learn Spanish in Ixtepec/Huatulco, Oaxaca!

This is not the desertland of northern Mexico and southern California, but jungle and coffeeland. Fifteen young intellectuals will congregate in Oaxaca in the summer of 2017. UCR is selecting fifteen of the most intellectually motivated students in CHASS and CNAS—sciences, social sciences and humanities—for this program. First priority for entrance into this program is students in the Honors Program. If you are in the Honors Program and/or have an overall GPA of 3.5 or above, this is your most interesting way to not only earn 8 UCR credits, but pursue a project in your major as a possible precedent to an honors thesis or senior thesis related to Oaxaca, Mexico or Latin America. At the same time, you can actually learn Spanish and the very specific cultures of Oaxaca while earning 8 credits in the far southern southern portion of the state of Oaxaca in the peaceful and friendly small towns of Huatulco and Ixtepec. Visit the Cultural Center of Juchitán founded by world-class painter Francisco Toledo.  Enjoy the nearby beaches and balnearios. This is one of the safest settings for study anywhere in the Americas—hundreds of miles away from conflicted and violent Northern Mexico. For the advanced classes (Spanish 170E and Spanish 190) the main faculty will be UCR Professor Raymond L. Williams with interesting participation of local Mexican faculty. Students with less than Spanish 101 upon arriving will do a special project for Spanish 190 that will include language study. You will be speaking, reading and writing Spanish daily, and hosted by your acompañante among the local students. You will not be just studying cultural difference, you will walk, talk, and absorb a world not seen in California or Northern Mexico.
